Overcoming Internal Barriers to Job Hunting
Commentary by: Anna Navarro
Aired March 24, 2008

Some people have trouble selling themselves, even though they are adept at selling ideas or products.

That was the case for Edith. She wanted to leave the job she was in, but the thought of job hunting made this usually self-confident woman hit a brick wall.

She had a slight stutter that only surfaced when the spotlight was on her, personally. It never happened when she was making business presentations or even negotiating deals, but it happened often in job interviews. It made her self-conscious and disabled her clarity of thinking. That led to poor interviews and a dread of job hunting.

Because she was desperate, she decided to try “Emotional Freedom Techniques”. This approach involves tapping acupuncture points, and doing rapid eye movements while focussing on the problem. It's a mechanical procedure, not psychological. She found it very odd. But to her amazement, by the time she finished working through it, she no longer dreaded the idea of interviewing.

Several weeks later she had her first interview and it went smoothly. In fact, she could hardly remember why she'd dreaded interviewing in the past. With this problem out of the way, Edith quickly found a wonderful new job.

I admire Edith for responding in such an open-minded way to the crisis she was experiencing. Instead of retrenching she decided to try something new and very different. Sometimes that's what it takes to get through a brick wall.
