Talk Show Host/Producer

The Opportunity:

St. Louis Public Radio, an NPR member station, is seeking an experienced talk show host/producer. Duties for this full-time position include hosting and contributing to the production of our signature talk show program, St. Louis on the Air, and occasional specials and events, both live and recorded. If you are the successful candidate, you will join St. Louis Public Radio’s talk show team of professionals committed to outstanding news, issues and culture coverage. You will conduct and help shape engaging live and recorded interviews on a variety of topics. The talk show host/producer will be part of a team that includes two producers, a senior producer, a part-time production assistant and an executive producer.

Responsibilities:

In this position, you’ll host our talk program St. Louis on the Air and other live or recorded special programs. You’ll need impeccable preparation, sound news and talk show judgment and a solid grasp of journalism ethics and editorial decision-making. And because it’s live radio, you also need to be nimble and confident in the face of the unexpected.

As talk show host/producer, you will lead listeners in civil discussions on important issues. We’re looking for someone who appreciates the art of interviewing, and who demonstrates respect for our guests and audience. Intellectual depth and curiosity on a wide range of topics is essential. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate strong editorial and writing skills in producing material for the show and forward promotions.

Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience and excellence as a journalist and conversationalist is required with experience in a live setting preferred. You must have a proven track record of solid interview skills, engaging audiences and working effectively both independently and on a team. If you don’t have experience hosting both talk shows and news magazines, we can train you in one of these areas.  Excellent writing, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are also required. You must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule and respond to breaking news as necessary. You must be willing to encourage and support in your work the inclusion of diverse experiences and perspectives.
